We were ALL wrong
In the end, it was the alternator that failed. While this is a relatively easy thing to replace, I was just fed up with the truck and no longer wanted to deal with it. I shed the smallest of tears that day, and have been thankful ever since.

I will put my money on something involving fire that somehow gets you arrested.
